Recommendations: Toward a New Evaluation Framework

The following recommendations are based on a review of literature; several survey studies in the last decade on the subject of evaluating creative practice research (Gibson & Webb, 2019; DASSH, 2020; Knowles, 2023; ANU, 2025); a review of available university research reporting guides; and sector consultation undertaken by the DDCA across a range of activities: DDCA National Online Forum 2024; Creative Matters 7; DDCA National Online Forum 2025. Based on these the DDCA put forward a draft set of recommendations for sector consultation (including peak bodies) via an online survey as well as written submissions. All material is published on the dedicated DDCA webpage Towards a New Evaluation Framework. Based on the survey results, the DDCA submits the following recommendations as endorsed by the majority of the sector.

The recommendations cover certain foundational positions that cohere the sector; create parity across universities; confirm previously contested spaces; and state further work that needs to be undertaken toward the goal of designing evaluative measures appropriate to the creative arts disciplines.
